The Artists Way - Sense of Identity (Wk 2)
Who? Who?
Happy Thursday everyone!
It was wonderful to hear how different people are using the tools (and to hear that I am not the only one who isn't in love with the practice of affirmations- thanks Lisa for your insights on that).
To share a little bit from this chapter, I found it helpful to think about Poisonous Playmates and Crazymakers even if some of her writing about them seemed slightly harsh.
Personally, a big takeaway from this chapter was that creative expression is a fragile thing. I remember when the first copies of my book arrived and I was beyond excited. I showed it to someone close to me and they made a critique on the cover art.
What a buzzkill that was.
In that moment I was excited and wanted to show the physical proof of months of work and the other person thought I was looking for feedback. Even though their comments were totally fair and even helpful, those well meaning comments fueled the flames of self-doubt for me about the worthiness of my words and the project itself.
This person was neither a "poisonous playmate" nor a "crazymaker" but I learned just how raw I was feeling about my creative output at the time. It showed me how sensitive I was to outside criticism and skeptical that I could put out something that would make a positive impact on yoga teachers.
Week 2 - Conversation Starters
As always feel free to comment on any of these things or share something about the chapter you found helpful, interesting, don't agree with or wouldn't use.
1. Are you keeping up with your Morning Pages and Artist Date? What have you been doing to support these commitments?
2. Have you experienced someone in your life currently trying to de-rail or overshadow your creativity?
3. Where do you stand on your approach to attention on the present or skepticism?
4. Any insights you wish to share based on some of tasks from this week?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
