The Artists Way - Safety & Recovery (Wk 1)
Happy Thursday everyone!
It was so inspiring to read your insights from last week. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share something with us. From here on in, I want you to feel free to both post about your own journey and to respond to one another (I will be doing this too).
To share a bit about this week, it took little effort to do the morning pages and a lot of effort to get to the artist date this week. Julia says that the Artist Date is actually the hardest of the two and I found that to be so this week. As much as I love the idea, I am currently working on a new book, setting up our home, teaching and oh yes...looking after my seven month old daughter. Because of all this I don't get much time alone and when I do I usually reserve it for working on my ever lengthening "to-do" list.
Because Steve is going through this book/program as well he spotted my resistance to carving out time for this tool and took Audrey out to a baby swim class for about two hours with firm instructions to "do the date".
It was so interesting to see the part of myself that just wanted to reorganize the house or sit down and work on something "constructive" with this space. It took about fifteen minutes for me to remember that as much as I love my family, I also like solitude.
My date was perhaps not exciting, but when I was honest about what I wanted to do not just what would be a "constructive" date, it was to spend time in the sauna, read the wonderful and inspiring book EJ let me borrow and colour at my new desk.
I appreciated having time to do these things I really love and find inspiring but rarely have time for.
Week 1 - Conversation Starters
There were a number of powerful ideas in this chapter. As always feel free to comment on any of these things or share something about the chapter you found helpful, interesting, don't agree with or wouldn't use.
1. Are you keeping up with your Morning Pages and Artist Date? What have you been doing to support these commitments?
2. Do you relate to the Shadow Artist?
3. What are some of the core negative beliefs you might be holding on to as truth?
4. Affirmations. I haven't used affirmations in over ten years. I am experimenting with them for this process but personally have found different methods that feel more authentic for me in dealing with self-talk and stories. Do you enjoy affirmations and find them helpful? Or could you do without?
5. There is a list of tasks for this week. Any insights you wish to share based on some of these?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
