Re: Making it as a yoga teacher
Dear friend,
Yoga is a strange profession to go into.
I remember telling my beloved yoga teacher one day after an early morning Mysore class that I was very close to giving up my nine to five job in the music industry to teach yoga full time.
I knew he would understand, since he had left what I imagined was a stressful job as a social worker some years before. My happy little bubble was burst when he cautioned me strongly against it. He told me that although teaching yoga is wonderful, trying to make a living doing it is very very difficult. I was stubborn and I did it anyway, but he wasn't wrong.
I have taught for over 10 years and it hasn't been easy.
At times I have been burnt out, financially drained, spiritually uninspired and taken for granted. I have seen the dark side of an industry that makes billions of dollars while the general workforce of teachers is overworked and underpaid.
I have watched beautiful and inspiring teachers lose their passion for the yoga practice and quit teaching altogether because they lacked the skills to successfully run their business. My teacher was right. There are many disheartening pitfalls on the road to teaching, even if it is a part-time endeavor.
However, if you make it up the steep learning curve, teaching Yoga can be a beautiful lifestyle choice.
There are overwhelming positives to teaching yoga as a profession such as:
Do the benefits outweigh the risks? In my experience, they sure do!
And if you want to be among the lucky ones with a thriving yoga business, without getting trapped and jaded by the roadblocks that all teachers face, then consider joining me for the Yoga Teacher Survival Course. Keep reading to find out more.
