Yesterday, Steve shared some wisdom we have learned from one of our Love + Success Summit speakers Tiffany Shlain (if you aren't registered for the event, you can do so here; it's FREE).
In our home, we are more plugged in now than ever before.
My kids do everything virtually from kindergarten to piano and even yoga.
But after reading Tiffany's book 24/6, I knew I wanted to have a no-screen day every week, but wasn't sure if I could pull it off.
The thought of not being available on the weekends to tie up loose ends, not finding out until Monday that our website was down or that a client was having trouble accessing something, sounded more stressful than being able to just check my phone and email over the weekend.
I was torn, but I decided to give it a try and I am so glad we did because our screen free day is beautiful.
If this is something you are interested in doing here are a few things that have helped make this work for me and my family (in addition to reading 24/6 because Tiffany has been doing this for a long time and makes a great case for unplugging one day a week)
1. Work up to it.
As an entrepreneur going offline for 24 hours freaked me out a bit. I started with 8, then 12 and have worked up to 24 hours.
2. Decide what you want your "rules" to be ahead of time so you aren't negotiating with yourself every time. Personally, my rules are no working, no TV, no email, no social media, no texting or FaceTime (unless it's my BFF's birthday or something). At the moment I do allow screens if I am doing a Peloton ride or to start up music.
3. Luxuriating is a must for me.
An unplugged day is my day to have an extra long sauna + spa time. I spend more time on the meditation cushion or reading in bed with my kids. We play our favourite boardgames.
I write more, read more, think more and give myself the freedom to do whatever I feel like doing without the limits of the time blocks on the calendar.
If this is something you love the idea of but think you could never pull off, I urge you to read 24/6 and join us live during the Love + Success Summit here, May 11-13 to learn directly from Tiffany Shlain herself.
